The honest answer

Jesmonite® is not certified food-safe. It’s a decorative casting material, not a food-contact material – and the sealers used on it aren’t food-safe either. So we don’t recommend serving food directly on a raw Jesmonite® surface or using it for anything wet, acidic, oily or hot that touches food you’ll eat.

That doesn’t mean it can’t go on your table – it just means using it the smart way.

How to use Jesmonite® around food safely

  • Use a barrier. Serve food on a plate, in a bowl, or on baking paper set inside your Jesmonite® tray or dish – the cast piece becomes the stylish holder, not the food-contact surface.
  • Keep it to dry & brief contact. Wrapped chocolates, whole fruit for display, bread rolls in a lined basket – fine. Loose, wet or oily food directly on the surface – not recommended.
  • Avoid hot, acidic or greasy food in direct contact.

What Jesmonite® is perfect for

Plenty of “tableware-adjacent” pieces are ideal, because they don’t hold food directly:

  • Trinket & ring dishes, jewellery trays
  • Coasters and drinks trays (glasses and mugs, not open food)
  • Catch-all bowls for keys, matches or display fruit
  • Vases, planters, candle holders and decor
  • Serving styling pieces – a board or plate sits on top, the Jesmonite® is the pedestal

Cleaning your pieces

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap; don’t soak them or put them in the dishwasher. Sealing a piece (once fully cured) makes it easier to wipe clean and more water-resistant – just remember sealing doesn’t make it food-safe.
